MY ART NOUVEAU JOURNAL

This is my cover and it is A5 size.

This is the 1st page that I did and has an image from The Graphics Fairy with a rosette trim on 2 edges.

This is my second page done with a couple of napkins. I need to incorporate the metal elements into the page.

This is Lisa's spread...beautifully drawn and painted.
The soft colours make me feel very peaceful.

This is Louise's spread. She has drawn and painted the Paris Metro Station.
I love all of the line work and the perspective that Louise has achieved.

This is Janie's spread and it is very dramatic with Gold and Red and crystal embellishments.
Love it!!

This is by  Deborah and is a very peaceful page.
The panels on either side have a fabric feel and the shimmer is gorgeous!!

This is by Annabelle and is so beautifully done with paint and some collage elements.

Jenny has replicated an advertising piece and it is awesome. The colours are very rich and I think she may have used acrylic ink. The writing at the bottom says, "Milk so pure, the cats want some too!"

This is by Robyn and opens out...I forgot the page underneath so will add it later.

I particularly like the synchronous nature of this and love the soft colors.

Pam's Attempt at Art Nouveau.

This month I had the privilege of working in Roz's beautiful Art Nouveau art journal. It is a really nice size and very beautifully made.  Roz you are going to adore it when you get it back, it is so beautiful.  It is also quite interactive with some works done landscape format, others portrait and still others in what I may call reverse landscape.  Hello Janie. You will just have to wait and see.

I started out with some Lindys Stamp Gand sprays, I was after bling.  Then I ruled out my grid and drew in the design.  For the colour I used some pearl water colour paints I have.  The outcome is very pretty.

I added a quote by Elizabeth Kubler Ross and called it done.  I hope it fits the bill Roz.

Annabelle's Art Nouveau

I had to do a bit of research for Roz’s journal 

and I am not sure I got the style right

 but I had fun working in it anyway. 

I hope you don’t mind Roz if it’s not quite art nouveau.

 Here are my process pics. 

I sketched my girl, spent some time trying to get the hair right 😊

Then I added collage and finally the words.

Art Nouveau in Watercolour

Researching what to create inside Roz's beautiful book was fun ... there are so many Art Nouveau artworks that are perfect for turning into an art journal - Tiffany glass, sculptures, oil paintings, posters and advertising were just some of what I found. I'm sure you've all thought the same - "oh wow, where do I start?". 

You can only um and arr so many times! I decided to recreate something by Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923). He's the artist who painted and designed the famous "Le Chat Noir" posters. Love that cat! Théophile painted a beautiful rooster too (which I almost used) but in the end I chose his "Lait pur Sterilise" poster. I love the cats in this poster, they have purrfectly happy faces!

I took a few photos of how it all came about, but really, all I did was trace a picture, colour it in with paints then outline it all with black pen and grey marker. Took ages and lots of waiting for layers to dry but its such a simple technique, especially when you're working with solid colours. 

I used a lightbox to trace the design including the lettering. Always feels like cheating when I do this, but drawing people is not my best thing, and each time I drew her face, she ended up like a little old lady glaring at the cats.

The first layer I used pale yellow and yellow ochre with a hint of red to warm up the yellow ochre then left it to dry. Next was the hair and dress... 

Watercolour isn't a very forgiving medium and I almost started again a few times. Black outlines can cover up a multitude of errors! lol :) It also helps reminding yourself "its fine, its art, there are no mistakes in art!"

It wasn't until I'd finished the cats that I was happy with it... they're wonderful animals and Théophile captured their eagerness really well. They were a pleasure to draw and paint.

All outlining finished and drying, onto the words... after all, it is a poster!

I traced the lettering too, putting the "de la Vingeanne" under the main tagline instead - just a bit of artistic license! My version is all about the cats and girl so left off the wording under her dress and the fawn background.

Lastly, I added marks and speckles using grey felt tipped pen. I traced the artist's name in red pencil, then added my name with his as well, pretty sure he won't mind! lol :)

All finished, trimmed, folded and stuck inside Roz's book :) Phew, well planned - no cat has his head folded in half! Its like packing toy animals in a box for moving house... you can tell which box they're in by the air holes or nose sticking out of the box gaps!

I've named the cats (left to right) : Sammy (my Nanna's orange tabby cat), Steri (my wild black cat) and Krystal (our current cat).

In case you're wondering, its an advert for Vingeanne, a milk company who sterilised milk and claimed it was still so fresh and pure even cats want it to drink.

Janie's Art Nouveau piece, adapted from an Erté design of the period, in Roz's journal.

I painted on 2 coats of Atelier Gold Paint, then sprayed some darker gold Lindy's spray through a mesh, for a bit of texture. I then placed my pre-prepared piece of art work on the page and stuck it down

My next move was to repaint the red with Dr PH Martins liquid acrylic ink (super product - very dense colours) At this point, I also started adding glitter to the fall on the head dress.

Half of the glitter is now applied - quite a long process and my thumb started getting numb from squeezing the glitter, glue bottle.

Pretty well finished. The collage pieces of stylized peacock feathers were added, Lindy's Moonshadow mist spray were added to the head dress and garment (painted on, not sprayed). and curly whirlies added in gold added with a 3D pinhead applicator.

Art Nouveau by Louise

Roz's lovely Art Nouveau journal arrived this month and it took me a while to come up with a theme. I was planning on drawing my girlfriend's lovely cottage but although it does have elements of art nouveau it is more federation. I am learning all the time :)

Further discussion with Kathy and she suggested the Paris metro and once I saw the gorgeous subway entrances I was entranced. Now I have another place I want to visit.

Lisa working in Roz's Art Nouveau Journal!

It's wonderful to start a new journal round!  All of the themes that our participants have chosen are really interesting, and for once, I'm thinking in advance about what I shall do in these journals...!

I had to do some research on Art Nouveau when I received Roz's journal; I was always getting confused between Art Deco and Art Nouveau.  Probably still will, but I think Art Nouveau is more classical in style, and less geometric.  

One thing I discovered - I have always loved the art 'posters' of the late 1800s by Toulouse-Lautrec, but did not know they were Art Nouveau!  Gustav Klimt and Alphonse Mucha were also prolific in this period.  Mucha's posters are just gorgeous, so I decided to do one in his style!  

I actually took a few progress pics while I was doing this page, so shall share them here!  

I gessoed my page and then drew a rough sketch of my girl, using old photos and Mucha's posters for inspiration.

Next I inked in all of my lines with my trusty Pitt pen.  I have a variety of sizes of these, and also love Uni Pin and Micron pens - they're all waterproof so great to use with watercolour.

And lastly I watercoloured my poster, trying to keep the colour palette similar to that which Mucha used!

Hope you like this Roz; I enjoyed coming up with my own version of an Art Nouveau poster!
