Janie’s Journal.

I enjoyed working in this journal but once again I got in the zone and didn’t take photos of my process. I find this to be the hardest thing for me to do. I started by sketching the face in watercolour pencil then I collaged tissue paper on the top half and around the right side of her face. Then I worked on her face using watercolours. Next I worked on her headdress/hat. Then I did a bit of fine tuning of her face and found a place for my words. I am the last person to do a spread before it heads home, it has some beautiful art inside, I am sure you will love it.

I also find it difficult to add photos in the right order, I think I might need a new iPad this poor old thing can’t download the new updates which might make this a bit more user friendly but then again it might be the old operator that can’t work the new updates. But the photos are here and I’m sure you can work out which order they should be in. Thank you so much Janie for letting me add to your beautiful journal.

Trees - the Last Page in Louise's Journal

Louise's Journal arrived safe and sound after a short vacation via the South Pole I think, even though I didn't find any penguin feathers attached.  Louise visited just after it arrived so she was able to see it was safe and sound but had to wait a little while longer for its return.

My page started with my desire to use a favorite leaf stamp around the edges of the page and a quote I had seen online.

The background was just a gentle touch of color using my Pan Pastels and a little bit of stenciling, before adding the leaves, some of which were stamped and colored directly on the page, others cut out and stuck on.

I roughly drew and painted a border to frame my main imagery and quote.  The poem/quote took up a entire page and I drew a simple tree on the other side coloring it in with Posca Paint Pens.

I am planning on delivering this now completed journal back to Louise in person in the coming weeks.

Thanks to everyone who was in this round and worked in and on my journal which I also have back safe and sound, I loved seeing the imagination of each of you and taking inspiration from all these beautiful pages.

I look forward to joining a round again with you all some time soon.

AAJS5: Jenny's "Tales of Brothers Grimm"

Sharing my journal pages in Jenny's Journal - the last one for this round - can't believe the journals are making their way home to everyone - it has been so much fun an can't wait for the next round to start!

 

I started by adding some gesso to the page to give it a base and then added dobs of watercolour paint which I spritzed with water and then "smooshed" around with a baby wipe!

 

 

I added some paper doileys around the edges.

 

 

Sprayed some black Dylusions ink - wanted to stay with a red/white/black/gold theme for the pages.

 

 

Splattered some gold paint over the pages with a large paint brush and edged the border with the brush to use the excess paint as well.

 

I used collage gals by Art Tea Life - of course - my favourite store as I have mentioned before LOL!!! 12 Dancing Princesses - LOTS of fussy cutting!!!!!

 

 

I thought they should have little gold tiaras being princesses so I punched little gold crowns to add.

 

Started arranging them and gluing them to the page along with some gold washi as "platforms" for them to stand on.

 

 I printed the wording on gold paper and added to the tops of the pages.

So much fun creating this page even with all the fussy cutting and sticking on!!!

My Round 6 Journal - Music & Lyrics

My theme for the next journal swap is Music and Lyrics.  I love music and have the radio on all the time.  Much to my kids' disgust, I love to sing, especially in the car.  That I'm no good at it certainly doesn't stop me!

I'm not one for classical music, though I do appreciate the gift that these musicians have.  I like a lot of different music - if a song has great lyrics that 'speak' to me, I love it.  And will usually learn the words.

So for this journal swap, I'd like participants to come up with a spread about their favourite song, and include a line, a verse, chorus, or the whole song on your page!

I made the journal around A5 size, same as the previous swap, as I like this size to work in.  Some pages have flaps and some don't - pick whatever suits you, or cut the flap off!  The paper is 225gsm so will stand up to whatever you want to throw at it.

I put some silver elastic around it, and here's the front cover - painted, collaged and stamped.  

The piano keyboard on the right is actually a flap over the cover, and I like how this turned out!

I even made a couple of music note stamps out of kids' erasers that you can see on the left hand side.

 

The left hand page is my first page, which basically states what I've said above!  And the right hand page is my rear cover.  This was simply gessoed, flowers doodled, and painted with watercolours.  I love the effect you get when you watercolour over gesso. 💜

And  here's my entry in the journal - Flame Trees, by Cold Chisel.  This is watercolour with faux calligraphy.  This song is my favourite song ever, and whenever I hear the opening stanza, I can't help but sigh with pleasure.  It's the wonderful music, but also the amazing lyrics.  I've chosen to include the chorus.  I grew up in country South Australia, and this song brings back the bittersweet memories of being a teenager in a small town.  It's also my funeral song. 😃

I look forward to learning about other people's favourite songs, and how they bring them to life in my journal!

My entries in Sharon's Mermaids and Seahorses

I started by tearing up some green fibrous paper that came from Joan. In the picture I am making sure it will fit. I glued it down and left the right hand corner as a pocket that didn't get used!

I used gesso and pixie powders to paint the background and added some wavy texture  with the brush.

I found these papers that I had been experimenting on some time ago.

I  used the bottom one to make a mermaid paper doll.

Here is the finished spread. The mermaid's face is a paper moulded piece that someone gave me. I had to modify it quite a bit so that it fit the body. I used fibres for her hair and added some extra decorations. I tried writing the saying out and didn't like it so I did that in Photoshop. 

The fish and shells are paper cut outs and the seahorse, turtle and square piece are all metal.

I added the fibres around the edges to finish it off.

Hope you like it Sharon...I loved doing it!!

I did an extra page as there were a few blanks left.

This is a digital piece that I did some time ago. It fit the theme and the page.

I added the trim at the bottom.

Flying Fox

I am the last artist to work in Roz Willoughby's lovely silhouette travelling art journal.

My page is inspired by the 20 000 flying foxes we have on Susan and Peanut Islands in the mighty, mighty Clarence river in Grafton NSW. 

They are such a magnificent sight filling the sky at sunset, swooping down to the river to skim the surface wetting their furry chests so they can get a drink after a long hot day sleeping in the trees before dispersing for their evening of foraging and pollinating.

These colonies are native to the east coast but innocently inspire quite a bit of contention in human communities. Personally I admire and appreciate them and I am a keen gardener and fruit tree grower and spent 2 years living right next to a huge colony further down river. I like to live and let live and tread lightly upon this earth.
