Colleen's paper napkin art journal from round 6 has arrived home.

Dragonfly Garden with Serviettes

Collage with Paper Napkins for Colleen

For Colleen's art journal page, I've used the Jane Davenport Collage Papers, aka printed paper serviettes... a packet of pretties to use in art. Together with acrylic paint, matte medium, paint pens and glitter glue, I've created a garden with a girl, flowers and dragonflies!

To start with, I tore two of the same serviettes into pieces that fitted around the portrait of the girl (which is printed on the same serviettes).

Using a Matte Gel Medium, I glued all the pieces down around the face... the end result looks like I drew the face and simply added the collage around it :)

Once dry, I painted the shapes of the dragonflies and flowers in lightly using Dylusions acrylic paint (Calypso Blue). Then I filled in the rest of the background leaving the dragonflies, flowers and her hair free of colour (so it showed the serviettes).

Next was the greenery for the garden. I used Dylusions acrylic paint (Lemon Zest, a clean bright yellow) mixed into the remainder of the Calypso Blue I had on my plate. The variation of the green was created simply by adding more yellow to create a lighter green, with some areas using only yellow. Being a semi-translucent paint, it layers beautifully :) The blue flower is left free of green paint showing the layer underneath.

All the pretty white and green flowers were created using foam stamps with acrylic paint (white and yellow). The stamens and centres for the flowers were handpainted spots of black, white and yellow.

Each of the dragonflies had a whitewash over the tips of their wings to lift them off the page. Shadows were added around the hair, parts of the dragonflies and flowers using a wash of black paint. Once everything was completely dry, all the extra details were drawn in using white and black paint pens.

While wandering through my stash of Tim Holtz Stickers, I found some quotes that suited my page perfectly. The super tiny tattoo style stickers I've had for ages work well too... so cute! I haven't added anything else to the original print of the girl except for altering her eyes ever so slightly.

Can't really see, but there is glitter glue over the wings...

The finished page is full of beauty and wisdom. Thoughts added from Tim Holtz Stickers were 'Shine brightly, be fearless' and 'Do all things with great love.' and my current favourite...

Not only does my mind wander… sometimes it walks off completely.

Finally, I stuck down a quote sticker from Dyan Reaveley says “Never forget your sparkle” (with more glitter glue over the word sparkle, of course).

At the top right, I added some mini banners made from left overs and wrote the letters a r t in glitter glue. There's something magical about glitter :)

Hello Everyone - Did You Hear??????

 

 

My final pages in this Round 6 of Journals in Colleen's Paper Napkin themed Journal!

Some really fab spreads in this completed journal!!

 

 

I started by tearing strips of napkins and adhering to the pages - I covered the entire pages and once the gel medium was dry I trimmed off all the overhanging bits.

 

 

I used a thin layer of gesso to tone down the napkins but it still allows the pattern and colour to show through.

 

 

I printed out my collage elements - of course they are from "Art Tea Life" my fav Etsy store yet again LOL!!

 

 

I added strips of washi tape randomly on the pages as well along with some strips of muslin cloth.

 

 

I wanted to add a bit of "humour" to these vintage gals - the way they are sitting and their expressions were just what I was looking for!

What a fab round of journaling - a great range of themes - hope everyone enjoys their completed journals when they all make their way home!

Annabelle works in Colleen’s journal

I always love working with napkins so I had fun playing in this journal so much so I forgot to take process pictures along the way. 

I have been trying hard not to do faces in everyone’s journal but I could not resist the urge this time. I hope you like her Colleen, I am so sorry that my photo of the finished page is so poor.

For July, I tackled Colleen's Paper Napkin Journal and selected an oriental theme, cheers Janie.

I chose a selection of oriental napkins to use

painted the double spread background black 

firstly, the thin top layer was pasted to white copy paper, as it was being stuck on a black background. Then the elements of the napkins were cut out for positioning on the page.

finally, to tie composition together I sprayed all over with a gold metallic spray

Colleen's page in Louise's Gypsy Journal

Louise your journal is just devine. So much work & love went into it. This subject of Gypsies had me stumped, but after looking at a lot of images on the net, I chose two & printed them out. One was a black & white gypsy & the other a very colourful wagon.

I glued them onto the pages & added the flesh tone to her skin & a bit of colouring on the wagon as I figured out what to do next.

I wanted to widen the scene around that little bit of water. I had received a napkin in a recent swap & thought it would be perfect for a background. I tore it up & covered the rest of the pages completely with napkins. It looked a bit wishy washy, so I started to add colour to all the scenery. I did something I've never done before. I used distress ink refills to add the colour.

I added flowers & grasses & also used some distress crayons & tombows to some areas. Also rubbed some white paint over the water & sky.

I added words & outlining & thought it was finished , but then I noticed I had left out the wheel from the other side. 

I added the wheel & then thought I don't like her cheek. Then the pain & heartache of ruining a page set in. I stuffed up her face big time & I could not fix it. 3 hours later I decided to reprint it & glue a new face on. I ever so carefully added colour to it.

I really like what I created. Hope you like it too Louise.

Colleen's page in Janie's Exotic journal

Janie's Exotic Journal is full of lusciousness from those that worked in it before me.

I wasn't sure what to do, except that I knew I wanted to use tropical flowers.

I started with a painted & stencilled background

& lots of cut out flowers. I temporarily arranged the flowers around the edges & then thought

what will I put in the middle. I searched google for something & came across these gorgeous birds.

I now had a very large pile of cutouts to glue on.

Then I glued them all down, did some outlining & highlights & it was done.

I really like what I ended up with & hope you like it too Janie.
