Flying Fox

I am the last artist to work in Roz Willoughby's lovely silhouette travelling art journal.

My page is inspired by the 20 000 flying foxes we have on Susan and Peanut Islands in the mighty, mighty Clarence river in Grafton NSW. 

They are such a magnificent sight filling the sky at sunset, swooping down to the river to skim the surface wetting their furry chests so they can get a drink after a long hot day sleeping in the trees before dispersing for their evening of foraging and pollinating.

These colonies are native to the east coast but innocently inspire quite a bit of contention in human communities. Personally I admire and appreciate them and I am a keen gardener and fruit tree grower and spent 2 years living right next to a huge colony further down river. I like to live and let live and tread lightly upon this earth. 

Flowers the Seeds of Yesterday Spread in Roz's Journal

I am not the greatest at remembering to take photos or blog about my creations in our Journal Swap, but am here with a look at my Silhouette Spread in Roz's Journal I had the pleasure of creating in last month. 

I started by coloring the pages with Distress Oxides.  And once I had smooched the color across both pages I took a stencil and a spray bottle with some water and sprayed this through the stencil to add some interest and pattern to the page.

I used some Wildflower Stamps from Darkroom Door and a Quote Stamp from Paper Artsy.

I was keeping it simple as I often tend to do but I think that suited this Silhouette Shape.

Only one more journal to go and we will be receiving our own journals back which I am really looking forward to.  It's been fun being a part of this and seeing all the wonderful inspiration and beautiful pages everyone in both rounds of this swap have been creating.

AAJS5: Silhouettes for Roz...

Hi Everyone!

So excited to be the first to work in Roz's "Silhouette" Journal.

Lately I've been making a lot of bright coloured creations and I've done it again LOL!!

Roz's journal is landscape and each page is A4 size so a nice big area to create on! AND she has secured pages with elastic so you can actually take them out to work in!!

So being the first I decided to nab the middle opening page and decorate the whole thing in one go - so much fun!

I started with some bright acrylic paints and a brayer and added "blobs" of colour and rollered out to cover the page. Then used one of my favourite stencils and used all the same colours as the background to cover the entire page with a light sponge through the stencil.

I had ordered a pack of stamps from Ebay "Dina Wakley" and I thought they were my style of Silhouette and perfect for how I wanted my pages to look so I used all 3 stamps from the set to stamp along the bottom half of the page.

I wanted the whole page to be connected - not 2 separate themes - so I found a quote I liked and using some large alphabet stamps added the quote to cover the top half.

To finish off I used black paint and a credit card to make a lined border around the whole thing and added some sparkly gems to both pages.

I am really happy with how it turned out - hope Roz likes it!

Looking forward to getting another journal in the round next month to create in!

My Silhouette Journal

This is the temporary cover as I am going to use some beautiful cloth that Janie sent to me. I'll do it when my journal comes home.

Front Cover with images from The Graphics Fairy and letters stenciled with black gesso and cut out. Also added some splatters with Cosmic Shimmer Powder in Midnight Sky.

Inside back cover - I used White paint on red card and squished both sides together to get some texture. After that dried I added Cosmic Shimmer pixie powders and spray inks and copper paint.

1st page - this is a photo I took a few years ago. It is printed on copy paper and the journal page underneath has a coat of black gesso.

2nd page - Info about silhouettes in art and the figure is a Dyan Reavely stencil done with black gesso, cut out and adhered to the page.

3rd Page - Another one of my photos. I took this some years ago and also did the editing then so I can't remember exactly what I did. I knew that I wanted to use this photo as soon as I had decided on Silhouettes as my theme.
